Job Description
Purpose of Role
The purpose of this role is to analyse, design and engineer innovative software solutions aligned to the requirements of McLaren Racing.

About the Team
The Software & Data Science department is responsible for the analysis, design and delivery of bespoke software tools and methodologies that help improve the performance of our Formula 1 car. This spans everything from aerodynamic design workflows and wind tunnel data processing through to simulation, optimisation and trackside decision-making tools such as race strategy.

We are a cross-functional team bringing together software engineering, data science, machine learning and DevOps to deliver high-performance platforms and solutions.

As a Software Engineer, you will work across the full software development lifecycle, helping to design, develop and support software that directly contributes to racing performance. You'll collaborate with engineers, data scientists and subject matter experts to solve complex technical challenges in a fast-paced and highly innovative environment.

This role is primarily based at the McLaren Technology Centre, with hybrid working available. Due to the nature of track and tunnel operations, occasional flexibility outside normal office hours may be required.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from analysis and design through to testing, deployment and support.

  • Design, develop and maintain high-quality software solutions.

  • Collaborate with engineers, data scientists and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions.

  • Take ownership of assigned work and projects, with support and responsibility aligned to your level of experience.

  • Contribute to the development of scalable, maintainable and well-tested software.

  • Help identify and mitigate technical risks and challenges.

  • Share ideas, knowledge and best practices across the team.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement in engineering processes, tooling and standards.

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and software development approaches.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline (2:1 or above), or equivalent industry experience.

  • Experience developing software using modern engineering practices.

  • Experience with C#/.NET or a comparable object-oriented programming language.

  • Experience with frontend technologies such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React and CSS.

  • Experience using Git within a collaborative development environment.

  • Experience working with relational and/or document databases.

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Ability to learn quickly and work effectively within a collaborative team environment.

Desirable

  • Experience with Linux and containerised environments such as Kubernetes.

  • Exposure to distributed systems or streaming technologies such as Kafka.

  • Familiarity with Python and/or MATLAB.

  • Experience using Azure DevOps or similar application lifecycle management tools.

  • Experience working within agile software development teams.

Why McLaren?
This is an opportunity to work on software that directly supports one of the most technologically advanced and high-performing environments in sport. You'll join a collaborative team, work alongside experts across multiple disciplines and contribute to solutions that make a real impact both at the factory and trackside.

Whether you're at the start of your engineering career or already have significant industry experience, you'll have the opportunity to learn, develop and help shape the future of performance at McLaren.

We're particularly interested in candidates who are available to start in the near term, although all applications will be considered.

Appointment level will be determined based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
